FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2018) - Senior libero Gina Giacalone posted a 14-dig performance for the Queens College volleyball team, which showed a gutsy fight but ultimately fell in three sets to Bridgeport on Friday (Oct. 19) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Set scores favored the visiting Purple Knights by counts of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-9.
Queens (1-19, 0-9 ECC) got off to a fast start in the opening set, taking an 11-7 lead after Briana Green and Leeks Hollis combined to block back an attack from Amanda Keller of Bridgeport (12-8, 6-3 ECC). The home Knights continued to play well in the first frame with Lauren Kehoe collecting a kill to put QC ahead by a 17-16 margin, but Bridgeport eventually went up 20-18 on a Morgan Knight kill. Queens scored the net point thanks to Green, who swatted home a perfect set from Vanessa Juengerkes, but Bridgeport scored five of the remaining seven points to claim the first stanza.
The Knights opened the second set with three points all on Bridgeport errors, but the visitors broke a 3-3 tie with seven of the ensuing eight points to climb up to a 10-4 edge. Danielle Agbonifino collected a kill that helped the Knights come back to a four-point deficit at 13-9, but UB went on another long run to claim a 21-9 advantage before ultimately earning a 25-13 victory. The third set featured a similar storyline, with Bridgeport running off several long spurts to earn a 25-9 victory and the match win in three sets.
Juengerkes dished out 12 assists with four of them resulting in kills for Kehoe, who also celebrated her birthday with three digs and a service ace. Hollis added three kills and eight digs with Agbonifino and Maryjane D'Agostino each contributing three kills as well.
