FLUSHING, N.Y. – On a cool fall Saturday afternoon, the Queens College Volleyball team was unable to build on their strong first-set as they were swept 3-0 by the Bears of New York Institute of Technology (10-10, 2-5 ECC) in East Coast Conference action. The set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-14.
Queens (1-16, 0-7 ECC) hit a season-high .310 in the first set as they looked to take a 1-0 set lead. Both sides traded points before back to back kills by junior Lauren Kehoe put the Knights up 18-15 forcing a Bears timeout. With the Knights leading 21-18, errors came back to crush the Knights as the Bears finished the first set on a 7-0 run to take a 1-0 set lead.
The Knights took a quick 3-0 lead in the second set following a kill from sophomore Briana Green. But the Bears fought back as each side traded the first 24 points. Tied 12-12, NYIT built a 4-0 run to force a Queens timeout. But the Knights were unable to recover as they dropped the second set 25-18.
In the third set, the Knights did not look like the same team they were in the first set as Tiffany Verni paced the bears with four kills in a 10-1 run to effectively put the Bears on top and earn the win.
The Knights were paced by senior Leeks Hollis double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs, while Kehoe tallied seven kills. Senior Maryjane D'Agostino added six kills on the day, while classmate Gina Giacalone tallied in a team-high 16 digs. Senior Vanessa Juengerkes paced the Knights with 20 assists on the day.
UP NEXT: The Knights continue their five home game stand on Wednesday (Oct. 10) as they welcome the Lions of Molloy College (10-5, 5-2 ECC) with first serve slated for 7 PM.
