FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2018) - It started with one set victory and then the Queens College women's volleyball team built up momentum from there on its way to the squad's first win of the season. The Knights defended home court with a four-set victory over Concordia (N.Y.) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Tuesday (Sept. 18).
Queens (NY) 3, Concordia (NY) 1: 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18
Lauren Kehoe posted an emphatic 12 kills on a .334 hitting percentage to lead the Knights to the win as Leeks Hollis added 11 kills and Briana Green swung for eight kills on a .333 hitting clip. Alisha Matthews pushed out a career-best 32 assists and added seven digs for QC with Dee-Ana Mitchell posting a ten-dig performance in the triumph.
Queens (1-9) gritted through a back-and-forth first set, as Concordia (0-6) led for much of the frame until a kill from Kehoe started a three-point run to give Queens an 18-16 lead. The Clippers re-took a 23-22 lead but Queens scored on the next three points off a kill by Hollis, a service ace from Matthews and an attack error. The second set was a practical mirror image to the opening frame with Concordia tying the score at 23-all on an attack error before a kill from Green and an attack error gave the Knights a 2-0 edge in sets. The visitors rallied in the third set from a 20-16 deficit to score nine straight points and force a fourth set but Queens led 7-3, 12-7 and 19-11 before cruising to the victory.
Queens will return to conference play on Friday (Sept. 20) against Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry at 7 p.m.
