Knights Dominate Fourth Set in 3-1 Victory at Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Led by an all-around team effort, the Queens College women's volleyball team survived a third-set hiccup and dominated the fourth set to win its second East Coast Conference (ECC) road match of the year against the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday evening from the Voller Athletic Center. The Knights defeated the Redhawks, 3-1, with set scores of 25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-11.

With the win, Queens improved to 5-10 overall (2-4 ECC), while Roberts Wesleyan dropped to 1-20 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Queens was led by sophomore Cassidy Stewart's season-high five service aces and 12 kills, while junior Leeks Hollis posted her first double-double of the season with a season-high 13 kills and 14 digs.

The match started with each team trading points back-and-forth before a kill by reigning ECC Rookie of the Week Briana Green kick-started an 11-6 run for the Knights, forcing a Redhawks timeout at 19-14. Out of the timeout, the Redhawks attempted their comeback into the first set, taking the next two points before another Green kill gave Queens a 20-16 lead. But the home side refused to go away as they stayed within three before an attack error gave Queens the opportunity to close out the first set. Junior Leeks Hollis set up the first set win with a kill, as the Knights took the set, 25-20.

The second set was no different, as both sides went toe-to-toe before a kill by sophomore Cassidy Stewart allowed the Knights to open up the second set for a 12-7 lead. The Redhawks stopped the bleeding following a kill by Courtney Taylor and then tied it at 16-16 with a kill from Anastasia Smith. However, out of a timeout, Queens opened up an 8-2 run before the Redhawks made the Knights sweat it out for the second set victory, as a 24-18 lead quickly became 24-21. Following a Redhawks service error, Queens took a commanding 2-0 lead with a 25-21 second set victory.

With the deciding set in play, Roberts Wesleyan remained stubborn as both teams traded points. Following a Redhawks error, the Knights took a 22-20 lead but were undone by another Taylor kill and a Knights error to knot the set at 22-22. Taylor was too much for the Knights, as she recorded two straights kills to give the Redhawks a 26-24 third set victory.

Leading 2-1, Queens did not want to let their good work go to waste, as the Knights came out firing in the fourth set to take a 5-1 lead, forcing an early timeout from the Redhawks. Refusing to the let the timeout slow them down, Queens opened up a 12-2 lead. Following a kill by Hollis, the Redhawks used their last timeout, hoping to regroup with the score line reading 19-6. But the Knights closed out the set and match with kills by sophomores Lauren Kehoe and Anita Sengara for a 25-11 victory.

Green racked up 10 kills, while Sengara produced a season-high 15 digs. Senior Kristen Moore reached 40 assists for the fourth time this season and added eight digs, while classmate Reggie Anthony achieved 20 digs.
