FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing in its East Coast Conference (ECC) opener in front of a packed crowd inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium, the Queens College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Bears of NYIT on Tuesday evening. The set scores were 25-18, 25-17, 25-18.
Queens falls to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the ECC, while NYIT improves to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Knights came out with a lot of energy and used that to their advantage, taking a 7-4 lead after a Sengara kill early in the first set. After NYIT worked its way back to tie things up, Green slammed a kill to put Queens back up, 12-11. The Bears then went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. The Knights worked it back to a 19-17 differential, but the Bears capped off the set on a 6-1 run to take a 25-18 win.
In the second set, Queens came out hot, taking a 6-2 lead after a kill by sophomore Lauren Kehoe and an ace by senior Reggie Anthony. However, NYIT then answered with an 8-1 run, which forced Queens into a timeout. Kills by Sengara, sophomore Cassidy Stewart and then DiCocco brought the Knights within two at 12-10, and the difference remained two at 18-16 after an ace by junior Leeks Hollis. From there, NYIT again ended strongly, finishing the set on a 7-1 run to take the set, 25-17.
Queens battled to stay in it in the third set, but NYIT had too much firepower in the end. After the Bears jumped out to a 7-2 lead, the Knights chipped away with a pair of 4-1 runs that brought them within one at 11-10. A kill by Hollis kept the difference at two at 13-11, but that was as close as Queens would get, as NYIT took the set, 25-18, to clinch the match.
The Knights struggled to hit the ball effectively, posting a .011 kill percentage, while the Bears put forth a .287 hitting percentage. Karolina Moderova had a match-high 13 kills and eight digs for NYIT.
Queens is right back at it on Wednesday, Sept. 20, as the Knights travel to LIU Post for an ECC match at 7 p.m.
