ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2018) - In a match that will be replayed in one week's time during the East Coast Conference Tournament, the Queens College women's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Friday (Oct. 19) in Rochester, N.Y.
The win seals the fate for Queens (8-0, 6-0 ECC) as the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament, with the Redhawks (7-6, 3-3 ECC) serving as the fourth seed next weekend when the two teams meet in the ECC semifinals on Oct. 27.
The Knights swept every match in the conference affair, beginning with three victories in doubles play to earn the overall point for tandems. Reehan Rashad and Luisa Auffarth claimed a 6-2 win over Nthabi Mogopodi and Andrea Gallardo at the top tandem, while Louisa Brunetti and Marisa Ostoja posted a 6-0 shutout at the No. 2 spot against Salome Darsalia and Bijisha Shrestha. Laura Ortega Jover and Anica Knezevic were victorious at the No. 3 spot in a 6-2 win over Laura Freeman and Marousia Bosch.
Queens was not done, winning all six singles matches to secure the full seven points alotted for the match. Rashad gutted out a 6-4, 6-4 win at the top flight against Mogopodi---who was an ITA East Region singles finalist this year. Auffarth easily dispatched of Gallardo (6-0, 6-1) at second singles with Ostoja needing a second-set tiebreak to put away Bosch (6-3, 7-6). Brunetti bested Shrestha by a 6-3, 6-3 margin at the No. 4 singles flight while Ortega Jover took care of Freeman in a 6-3, 6-3 decision. At sixth-singles, Ruth Artaza Martin had no trouble with Leonie Spreng in a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The Knights will continue their Western New York swing on Saturday (Oct. 20) with an ECC match-up against Daemen at 7 p.m. Prior to that match, the team will warm up with an 11 p.m. contest against Division I Niagara University.
