FLUSHING, N.Y. – Despite being down at 1-0 after doubles play, the Queens College Women's Tennis team looked to their singles strength as they put forth another comeback victory in singles play to defeat the Bears of New York Institute of Technology in East Coast Conference play. With the win, the Knights improved their record to 6-0 overall, 4-0 in conference play, while the Bears dropped to 8-2 overall, and 3-1 in conference play.
In doubles action, the double pair of Louisa Brunetti and Marisa Ostoja made quick work of their counterparts in Cosima Hoch and Ivana Andric to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage taking second doubles 6-1. But the Knights were unable to build on their momentum as first doubles pair of Reehan Rashad and Luisa Auffarth dropped their match 6-3 to the pair of Diana Baumgartnere and Barbie Quagliardi. While the third double pairs of Ann-Kathrin Zilles and Monica Borobia defeated the Knights pair of Anica Knezevic and Laura Ortega Jover 6-3 to give the Bears a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
In singles action, the Knights tied the match 1-1 as Jover quickly dispatched Kaitlyn Byrnes 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Ruth Artaza Martin gave the Knights a 2-1 lead as she defeated Monica Borobia 6-1, 7-5. But the Bears fought back as Quagliardi defeated Reshad at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3 to knot the match 2-2. After taking the first set into a tiebreaker, Brunetti defeated Hoch 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at No. 4 singles to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
But the drama on a chilly fall afternoon continued as Auffarth fought back at No. 2 singles after dropping the first set 6-3, she forced a third set winning the second set 6-4. However, the comeback and the match would continue as Baumgartnere tied the match 3-3 winning the third set 7-5, turning the attention at No. 3 singles. Ostoja dropped the first set 6-2, before coming back in dramatic fashion to clinch the match 4-3 for the Knights with a 6-4, 6-4 second and third set victory.
UP NEXT: After wrapping up the home portion of their schedule, the Knights finish out conference play on the road for the remaining three games of the season. At the first stop, the Knights head to Rockville Center, NY on Saturday (Oct. 13) as they visit the Lions of Molloy College (1-3 ECC) with the first serve set for 11 AM.
