Day One of ITA East Tournament Concludes with Knights Alive in Singles and Doubles

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2018) - The Queens College tennis teams began the first day of ITA competition on Friday (Sept. 14) at the USTA National Tennis Center. Singles play began with qualifying round match-ups and the Knights were able to find success on the hard-courts of Flushing Meadows.

Men's Tennis

The reigning ECC Rookie of the Year Hugo Evanglista de Andrade advanced through the qualifying rounds by knocking off Assumption's Max Francis in a 9-7 slugfest. Meanwhile, Stanislas Bedrune won two matches to make the main draw; the Frenchman beat Adelphi's David Leader by an 8-3 score and then posted an 8-2 win over Jack Kosiorowski of USciences. Jose Zurro beat Assumption's Danny Waung by an 8-2 decision to advance to the Round of 64 while Kareem Rashad and Nick Volos had to win two matches to make the main draw. Both Rashad and Volos were successful in making the bracket for Day Two. Richard Sec, Cosme Jubera and Fernando Ramirez Lascurain each had byes into the main draw. 

Women's Tennis

Ruth Artaza Martin swept Saint Anselm's Lexi Stathis by an 8-0 decision to make the Round of 64 in the women's bracket. Laura Ortega Jover also qualified to the main draw for the Knights, winning 8-2 matches over Elkanah Linder of USciences and Tiffany Hamden of Le Moyne. Anica Knezevic and Line Sorsdahl Aasen both won their first qualifying match-ups but failed to win a second match that would advance them to the main draw. Louisa Brunetti, Reehan Rashad, Luisa Auffarth and Marisa Ostoja all had byes into the main draw.

The action continues Saturday (Sept. 15) with main draw singles and doubles competitions.
