FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jul. 26, 2018) - The Queens College women's tennis team was one of the top-16 teams in the nation at year's end. Now the squad looks to utilize that momentum from last year's NCAA Tournament to re-claim its spot atop the East Coast Conference.
A number of important contributors are returning to a squad that went 11-5 in 2017, won all seven of their games in conference play, and brought home a regular season East Coast Conference Championship. Reigning ECC Coach of the Year Alan Nagel will mark his 40th season as a head coach at Queens College with nearly a full roster of returnees that includes senior Reehan Rashad, senior Laura Ortega Jover, senior Line Sorsdahl Aasen, junior Louisa Brunetti, junior Ruth Artaza Martin and junior Araceli Bel Aleixendri. Emy Alplund is the lone departing member from last year's regional championship.
The Knights will kick off the 2018-19 season on Saturday, September 8th vs the University of the District of Columbia at 11:00am, who they beat last year in a dominant 9-0 performance. The very next day, Sunday, September 9th, the squad will take on Post at 1:00pm, a team that they did not play last year due to a cancellation. Later that week, the Knights will participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Regional at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center from Friday, September 14th through Monday, September 17.
After the regionals, the squad will be in Westchester for a matchup against St. Thomas Aquinas at 12:00pm on Friday the 21st. The team beat STAC 5-0 in the ECC Semifinal last year. Friday, September 28th marks the date that the Knights will look to avenge the loss they took at the hands of NYIT in the 2017 ECC Championship. That matchup is set for 12:00pm. On Saturday, September 29th, the squad plays at LIU Post at 12:00pm. Last year, the Knights defeated the Pioneers by a score of 6-3. The team comes back home for a match on Friday, October 5th at 2:00pm vs Wilmington University, an out-of-conference opponent that they beat 8-1 in 2017. After the brief one game home stint, the team ends their regular season with three consecutive away games at Molloy at 11:00am on Saturday, October 13th, at Roberts Wesleyan at 4:00pm on Friday, October 19, and at Daemen at 11:00am on Saturday, October 20th. The Knights beat all of these teams by a score of 9-0 in the previous season.
