Women's Tennis Falls in First Spring Competition to LIU Brooklyn, 9-0

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2018) - The Queens College women's tennis team opened spring play on Friday (Mar. 30) with an unkind welcome presented by the Blackbirds of LIU Brooklyn in a 9-0 defeat at the QC Tennis Center.

Despite the loss, there were some positive signs from a Knights team that hasn't played a match since this past October's ECC Championship bout with NYIT. Top doubles tandem Laura Ortega Jover and Reehan Rashad won the most games in doubles play for QC, falling by a 6-3 score to LIU Brooklyn's Anna Grigoryan and Ana Leonte. Line Sorsdahl Aasen and Araceli Bel Aleixendri won two games at the No. 3 doubles competition but fell in a 6-2 decision to the Blackbirds' duo of Clemence Krug and Malin Leysen. In singles play, Bel Aleixendri made Leysen work for a 7-5 first-set win at the third-flight before the Division I foe snapped up a 6-1 second set win. Meanwhile, Ruth Artaza Martin gave Jennifer Gogova a stiff test at fifth-singles before losing by a 6-2, 6-3 score line.

The Knights return to action on Friday (Apr. 6), hosting Goldey-Beacom College at the QC Tennis Center at 2 p.m. The bout between Queens and the Lightning will feature the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the ITA East Region rankings battling it out in Flushing.
