FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's tennis team capped off an East Coast Conference (ECC) Regular Season Championship with a perfect record after cruising to a 9-0 win over Molloy College on Friday. It marks the first ECC regular season title for the Knights since 2012.
Queens finished the regular season with an unbeaten mark of 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the ECC. Meanwhile, Molloy falls to 0-10 (0-7 ECC).
The Knights only lost one game in doubles and one game in singles, sweeping second doubles as well as first, second and fourth singles. The Lions were also shorthanded, handing the Knights points at third doubles along with fifth and sixth singles.
Juniors Reehan Rashad and Laura Ortega Jover claimed an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles to finish the regular season 6-3 at the top flight. Senior Emy Alplund and sophomore Louisa Brunetti improved to 10-2 overall (8-1 dual) with an 8-0 sweep at second doubles.
Rashad won her fourth straight No. 1 singles match in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, moving to 10-2 overall and 8-1 in dual matches. Sophomore Araceli Bel Aleixendri improved to 5-0 in dual matches with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at second singles. Junior Line Sorsdahl Aasen claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win in the third spot, while sophomore Ruth Artaza Martin finished conference play 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the fourth position.
Queens will host the ECC Championship next weekend as the top seed in the tournament, with the semifinals set for Friday, Oct. 27, and the finals slated for Sunday, Oct. 28, at noon.
