Knights Capture Top Seed in ECC Championship with Win at NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – In a rematch of the 2016 East Coast Conference (ECC) title match, the Queens College women's tennis team defeated a depleted NYIT Bears team on the road Wednesday, 7-1, to clinch the top seed in the upcoming ECC Championship.

It was the first win for Queens over NYIT since 2012. The Knights keep their unbeaten record intact, improving to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in ECC play. Meanwhile, the Bears fall to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Queens took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and then took five singles points before the final match was called due to darkness. NYIT was dealing with a number of injuries, handing Queens points at second doubles, third singles and sixth singles.

The Bears captured top doubles, but the Knights bounced back with a 9-7 victory from sophomores Ruth Artaza Martin and Araceli Bel Aleixendri in the third doubles spot. The sophomore duo improved to 5-0 at No. 3 and 4-0 in ECC matches.

Junior Reehan Rashad avenged her loss to Ivana Andric in the ITA East Regional Championship quarterfinals with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Andric at No. 1 singles. Senior Emy Alplund notched a 6-3, 6-3 win in the fourth slot, while Artaza Martin rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5. Sophomore Louisa Brunetti led ITA East Regional Singles Champion Lena Dimmer, 7-6 (7-2), 3-4, at No. 2 before the matched was called.

The Knights will look to finish the regular season undefeated when they host Molloy on Friday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m.
