BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – An undefeated record remained intact for the Queens College women's tennis team on Saturday, as the Knights went on the road and handed the LIU Post Pioneers their first East Coast Conference (ECC) loss of the season, 6-3. The win propels Queens into sole possession of first place in the ECC standings as the last unbeaten team.
Queens improves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while LIU Post falls to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.
The Knights faced uncharted waters, having to overcome a 2-1 deficit after doubles. Queens bounced back in a strong way, taking five of the six singles matches to grab the victory.
Sophomores Araceli Bel Aleixendri and Ruth Artaza Martin started things off right with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, improving to 4-0 in the third spot this season. However, the Pioneers notched a 9-8 (7-5) win at top doubles and an 8-6 win at the second flight to advance into singles play with a 2-1 lead.
Junior Reehan Rashad fought back to earn a big 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5 win at No. 1 singles, defeating Lara Scholtze, who defeated ITA East Region Champion Lena Dimmer just last week. Sophomore Louisa Brunetti captured a 6-2, 6-2 win at second singles, while junior Laura Ortega Jover cashed in on a 6-0, 6-2 win in the third spot. LIU Post took fourth singles, but Artaza Martin won, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, at No. 5, and Aleixendri locked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the sixth position to help seal the 6-3 win.
Rashad moved to 8-2 overall in singles on the season and 5-0 in ECC play. Meanwhile, Aleixendri improved to 3-0 at No. 6 singles and 2-0 in conference matches.
With the ECC Championship drawing near, Queens will travel to NYIT on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. for a rematch of last season's ECC title match.
