FLUSHING, N.Y. – Facing a gutsy St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) team in a heated East Coast Conference (ECC) battle, the Queens College women's tennis team remained undefeated on the season with a 5-4 home victory on Friday.
The win puts the Knights at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the ECC, while the Lady Spartans fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Queens took a 2-1 lead after doubles, but STAC came roaring back in singles. Senior captain Emy Alplund came through in the clutch, however, with the winning point at fourth singles to seal the win for the Knights.
Alplund was a double winner, as she and sophomore Louisa Brunetti captured an 8-3 win at second doubles to remain perfect (6-0) in dual matches. Sophomore Araceli Bel Aleixendri and junior Line Sorsdahl Aasen earned an 8-2 win in the third spot, and Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead. However, STAC slipped away with a 9-8 (7-5) win at top doubles to keep things interesting.
Junior Reehan Rashad moved to 4-0 in conference singles matches with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the top flight. Aleixendri was also a double winner on the day, tallying a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles. The Lady Spartans fought back though, winning at second, third and fifth singles. But it was Alplund who slammed the door shut for the Knights, moving to 6-0 in the fourth spot with a 6-1, 6-3 victory, as the Knights escaped with the conference win.
Queens will have some time to rest and recover before its next match, as Alan Nagel's squad will host Post University on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m.
