FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Junior Reehan Rashad of the Queens College women's tennis team moved on to the round of 16 in the singles main draw of the ITA East Regional Championships with a victory in her lone match on the second day of competition Saturday.
Rashad, seeded third in the tournament, had a bye in the first round and then picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Post's Annika Janson in the second round of the main draw to earn her spot in the round of 16.
Junior Laura Ortega Jover, seeded fifth, also had a first-round bye in the singles main draw, but dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision in the second round. Sophomore Louisa Brunetti, the No. 14 seed, earned a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 win in the first round before bowing out in the second round, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Emy Alplund claimed a walkover in the first round, but then suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat in round three.
In doubles, 10th-seeded duo Alplund and Brunetti advanced to the third round of the doubles main draw with an 8-2 second-round win, but came up short, 8-6, to the fifth-seeded team of Lotle Lesschr Post and Catarina Zheng. Meanwhile, Rashad and Jover, seeded third, dropped an 8-3 decision in the second round.
Rashad will take on 15th-seeded Mia Covic of Chestnut Hill College in the singles round of 16 on Sunday.
