FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's tennis team made a statement on Friday afternoon from the QC Tennis Courts, sweeping Roberts Wesleyan College in its East Coast Conference (ECC) opener, 9-0. Queens breezed through doubles before winning all six singles matches in straight sets, capturing their second straight home victory.
The Knights improved to 2-0 overall with the win, while handing the Redhawks (2-1) their first loss of the season.
Queens set the tone with quick wins at first and second doubles, and then took a 3-0 lead into singles after claiming third doubles as well. In singles action, it was all Knights, as Queens won all six matches in convincing fashion.
First, sophomore Louisa Brunetti and senior Emy Alplund rolled to an 8-0 sweep at second doubles, and then juniors Reehan Rashad and Laura Ortega Jover followed suit with an 8-2 win at the top flight. Junior Line Sorsdahl Aasen and sophomore Araceli Bel Aleixendri then capped off doubles with an 8-5 victory in the third spot.
Rashad, the reigning ECC Player of the Week, picked up right where she left off last week, taking a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles. Meanwhile, Brunetti remained unbeaten in a Knights uniform with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the second position.
