FLUSHING, N.Y. – Down 2-1 after doubles play, the Queens College women's tennis team battled back to defeat the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning, 5-2, in the NCAA Division II East Region II Finals on Tuesday. With the win, the Knights (14-3) advance to the Round of 16 for the second time in three years and sixth time in the last eight seasons.
The Knights found themselves trailing heading into singles play after the Lightning captured wins at the first and third flights. However, Queens won four straight singles matches, coming at the second, third, fifth and sixth flights, to earn the victory.
Laura Ortega Jover and Reehan Rashad picked up the lone doubles win for the Knights at No. 2, improving to 5-1 as a duo with an 8-4 win over Raquel Morais and Anna Hortelano Pey. Goldey-Beacom picked up a pair of 8-6 wins at first and third doubles, as Nina Sengl and Francesa Beg defeated Angelika Sobiecka and Emy Alplund at No. 1, while Alma Garcia Valle and Silvia Hortelano Pey topped Line Sorsdahl Aasen and Araceli Bel Aleixendri at No. 3.
Queens answered the call in singles play, but the Knights had to battle, with four matches coming down to the decisive third set. Ortega Jover started things off by rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 2 over Beg to tie the match at 2-2. Shortly after, Sobiecka collected a 6-2, 6-2 win over Garcia Valle at third singles, giving the Knights a 3-2 lead.
From there, the first, fourth, fifth and sixth flights all headed into a third set. Darya Kolesnichenko fought back to capture a three-set win, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3, over Manuela Cornejo at No. 6 to bring the Knights within just one point from victory. Ruth Artaza Martin then sealed it for Queens at No. 5, coming back to top Silvia Hortelano Pey, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, for the deciding point.
The Knights will now head to Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., for the Round of 16 on Wednesday, May 10, to take on BYU-Hawaii at noon.
