Philadelphia, Pa. - Over the weekend, the Queens College women's tennis team competed at the ITA Regionals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the team of Aylin Mehter and Yevgeniya (Jenna) Plevako upset the top seeded team of Sanchez and Burinato from NYIT, to claim the USTA/ITA Regional Championship title in doubles. The scores of the sets were 6-3 and 6-3.
As a result of the victory, Mehter and Plevako will now head to Fort Meyers, Florida, to compete against other doubles winners in the US National Tennis Championship. The dates of those matches run from October 9-13, 2013.
The Knights had five athletes play in the "A" singles draw, including Mehter, Plevako, Jennifer Fridman, Andrea Samson and Darby Brandon. The "B" singles draw featured Kim Xiong. In doubles play, Brandon and Anna Rodionova competed on the "A" side along with Weronika Kurka and Fridman. Kurka and Fridman advanced to the quarterfinals before they were eliminated, and they beat the team of Mecchi and Canals from Concordia along the way. Rodionova and Brandon beat Roberts Wesleyan's top doubles team before falling in a later round.
In singles play, Plevako made it to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion, Sara Burinato, 6-0, 7-5. Mehter advanced to the quarterfinals before her singles tournament concluded, and Fridman, Brandon and Samson all won their first-round matches. On the "B" side, Xiong made it to the quarterfinals before losing.
All in all, it was a strong showing for the Knights and the victory in doubles marked just the second time in ITA play that QC ever won the doubles title, but the first time was later vacated.
The Queens College women's tennis team returns to action on Friday, September 27, when they host Roberts Wesleyan in an East Coast Conference matchup.
