JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Queens College men's and women's swimming teams opened up their seasons against York College and the College of New Rochelle on Monday. The women's squad breezed to a pair of wins, while the men's team went 0-1-1.
On the women's side, Queens defeated New Rochelle, 121-76, and York, 122-48. Meanwhile, the men tied with York, 93-93, while falling to New Rochelle, 98-65.
Gabriela Almeida tallied three victories for the women's team, finishing first in the 200-meter freestyle (2:26.06), 100-meter butterfly (1:15.53) and 100-meter backstroke (1:15.75). Jennifer Arana-Perez registered two wins as well, taking first in the 50-meter backstroke (41.86) and 100-meter freestyle (1:05.99).
Rebecca Tepp took first in the women's 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 44.36, while Anna Lee was first in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:23.38. Queens was also victorious in both women's relay races, finishing 1-2 in the 200-meter medley and first in the 200-meter freestyle.
Jordan Melidor-Fuxis was strong for the men's team, picking up three victories. He placed first in the 200-meter freestyle (2:04.04), 50-meter freestyle (24.72) and 100-meter backstroke (1:03.23). TJ Soregaroli also claimed a victory in the men's 50-meter breaststroke (39.38). Soregaroli just missed out on a victory in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 32.75, while Nihaal Shameem also narrowly missed a victory in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:06.98.
The Knights will return home next for their Alumni Meet against Baruch College and Adelphi University on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m.
