Women's Soccer Wins on Senior Day, Thumps Dominican by 5-1 Score

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2018) - Senior forward Adriana Mendrinos scored the first goal and graduate midfielder Vincenza DeCrescenzo capped the scoring account as the Queens College women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 5-1 victory over Dominican (N.Y.) on Friday (Oct. 26) at home in Flushing.

Queens (3-9-4) controlled much of the pace in the victory, outshooting Dominican (4-13-1) by a 28-3 margin in total. The Knights nearly got on the board in the first sixty seconds, with Alma Mana'o almost beating Chargers goalie Autumn Rogers-Vazquez in the frame. The Knights would eventually get on the board in the 18th minute with Mendrinos squaring up on a free kick and putting her shot in the perfect location, as the ball floated into the top-left corner. Four minutes later, Victoria Ramirez put together a stellar one-on-one effort to beat the goalie from an almost-zero angle to give QC a two-goal edge. Ramirez dribbled from the far-left side of the Dominican defensive end, and then pushed the ball into the box before taking a looping shot that went over the head of Rogers-Vazquez and into the net. The Knights' advantage in shots was 14-1 and the team's lead went to 3-0 in the 43rd minut. On a corner from Mana'o, Dominican could not clear the ball off the defensive line; Stacy Gomez corralled the loose ball and chipped a pass to Guro Eriksen who put her shot into the top left corner to beat Rogers-Vazquez.

Dominican opened the scoring in the second half on a free kick that was deflected in front to Natalie Cargill, who put home the Chargers' lone good chance by goalie Shenae Kreps. The Knights would limit Dominican to just one more shot in the second half but would keep attacking the net at second-half goalie Angelica Contreras. Queens broke through in the 77th minute as Sarafina Smith displayed her own little piece of magic by dribbling through several defenders and sliding a shot underneath Contreras and into the back of the net. With the game in hand, DeCrescenzo scored the Knights' fifth goal of the contest in the 84th minute on a cross from Mana'o that was tapped by Eriksen and put home by the graduate midfielder.
