Eriksen Nets Overtime Game-Winner in Knights’ Victory at NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Sophomore Guro Eriksen ended a scoreless tie with the game-winning goal on a header in overtime to lead the Queens College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at NYIT in the Knights' East Coast Conference (ECC) finale on Saturday afternoon. It was the second win in a row for the Knights.

With the win, Queens improves to 4-9-2 overall and concludes its ECC schedule at 2-5-1 in the conference. Meanwhile, NYIT falls to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Senior Nicole Cranny (4-9-1) posted her second shutout of the season in goal for the Knights, stopping all five shots sent her way over 90-plus minutes. The Knights were able to overcome a 13-shot differential, as the Bears held a 20-7 shot advantage, but NYIT only had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Queens was strong defensively in the first half, limiting NYIT to just three shots, with only one going on-goal. The Knights put the pressure on between the 33rd and 42nd minutes, as freshman Hannah Gallivan and seniors Haley Gibbons and Erin Vernillo put four shots on goal, but NYIT goalie Jessie Sabal stopped all four attempts. Queens totaled five shots in the first half, including four on-goal, but the two squads were scoreless at the half.

The second half was dominated by the Bears, putting up 17 shots, with five going on-goal. Yet Cranny and the Knights were able to keep the Bears off the board, as regulation came to a close with zeros still on the scoreboard.

Just seconds into overtime, senior Courtney Locurcio took a corner kick to give the Knights an opportunity to score. Locurcio then placed the corner kick in perfect position for Eriksen to put the game away on a header, scoring her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Queens will visit Dominican (N.Y.) on Tuesday, Oct. 24, for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
