Stanton Strikes Twice as Queens Secures Road Victory Against Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – Freshman Agnes Stanton scored the first two goals of her career, including the game-winner, as the Queens College women's soccer team secured a non-conference road victory over Post University, 4-1, on Wednesday.

Queens' record improves to 2-7-2 on the season with the victory, while Post falls to 3-8 overall.

Sophomore Guro Eriksen and junior Adriana Mendrinos each scored a goal and combined for six shots, including five shots on goal. As a team, Queens dominated, outshooting Post, 29-5, and holding the Eagles to just two shots on goal. Senior Erin Vernillo recorded her third assist of the 2017 campaign and took seven shots, including five shots on goal, while classmate Haley Gibbons added an assist as well.

The Knights struck first, as Eriksen scored her fifth goal of the season at the 20:37 mark in the first half on a pass from Gibbons. With a 1-0 halftime lead, Stanton scored the first goal of her career off Vernillo's feed just 26 seconds into the second half, making it a 2-0 game. However, at the 59:48 mark, Post was able to close the deficit to one goal, when Sam Rodriguez scored the game's third goal.

Queens was able to regain the momentum they possessed earlier in the game when Stanton found the back of the net for her second goal of the contest at 63:44, giving Queens a 3-1 lead. Later in the game, in the 84th minute, Mendrinos scored her first goal of the season to make it a three-goal deficit.

Goalkeeper Nicole Cranny (2-7-1) earned her second victory of the season, as she saved two shots in net for the Knights. Post's Katharina Mertz and Elice Oman combined to take three shots. Goalkeepers Cailah Baranowski, Imelda Lazaro and Hannah Richards (3-7) saved a combined 12 shots for the Eagles.

The Knights are home next Wednesday, Oct. 11, as Queens will face off against against nationally sixth-ranked LIU Post at 3:30 p.m.
