Cuartas nets 2 in 3-2 win over Holy Family

Melissa Cuartas scored twice and Laura D'Amore added a goal as Queens College defeated Holy Family, 3-2, in Flushing, New York on Sunday. The Lady Knights improve to 1-1 with the win while Holy Family sees its record drop to 1-3.

Jenna Peveraro split the Holy Family defense with a pass to Cuartas, who put a right footer into the lower right hand of corner of the cage to give QC the lead in the 21st minute. Holy Family answered 18 minutes later when Kelsey Marvill floated the ball from the right wing into the top left corner to knot the game at a goal apiece. It looked like the half would end with the game deadlocked until Cuartas picked up a ball that had been punched out by goalkeeper Michelle Gianbrone and deposited into the net with just six seconds left on the clock.

The Lady Knights got an insurance goal when Caitlin Gracia's corner kick was headed in by Laura D'Amore in the 51st minute. It turned out that they would need the insurance when Jamie Lynn Wallace of Holy Family picked up a loose ball in tight and scored to cut QC's lead to 3-2. Lady Knights' goalkeeper Crystal Butler helped preserve the lead by stopping Dawn Curry in close with 5:25 remaining in the match.
