FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 6, 2018) - The Queens College women's lacrosse team scored the first two goals of its contest with American International College on Tuesday (Mar. 6) but it was the Yellow Jackets with the next seven markers leading to a 19-7 victory over the Knights at QC Lacrosse Field.
Queens (1-1) struck first in the opening ninety seconds of play as Mary Pat Gibble took a feed from Margaret Iavarone to beat AIC goalie Chelsea Davis and give the Knights the early lead. A mere twenty-five seconds later, Patriece Ausili doubled the lead on a pass from Rebecca Gibble and the Knights went up by two goals. AIC (2-2) controlled play from there on as the Yellow Jackets' Devin Coulter and Jessica Fontana each netted a pair of goals; the Yellow Jackets led 7-2 at the halftime break after outshooting the hosts by a 19-8 margin through the first thirty minutes of action.
The Knights opened the second half with a milestone goal as Sarah Koehler bagged her first tally of the season with less than a minute gone by to bring QC within a four-goal deficit at 7-3. American International then collected the next five goals to put the game away for good. Despite this, Queens rallied for a solid final twenty minutes of play with Koehler scoring twice and Iavarone and Mary Pat Gibble each adding a goal in the final thirty minutes.
Koehler and Iavarone led the Knights with three points each. Ausili had a team-high five draw controls to go along with her goal while freshman goalie Jessica Serpe accumulated 16 saves and ten ground balls.
Emilee Giancondino scored five goals to lead the Yellow Jackets as Coulter bagged a hat trick and Mikayla Demanche added two goals and three assists. Four other players had two-goal games for AIC as Davis made seven saves and picked up ten ground balls in the win.
Queens will travel to Caldwell for a Thursday afternoon (Mar. 8) showcase with the Cougars at 4 p.m.
