FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's lacrosse team ran into the unbeaten Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon, playing in its East Coast Conference (ECC) opener. The Knights held a 1-1 tie early on, but the Mavericks rattled off 16 more goals to take the victory.
Mercy, which is receiving votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Coaches' Poll, improves to 7-0 (1-0 ECC) on the year, while Queens falls to 0-4 (0-1 ECC).
After Mercy struck first 41 seconds into play, junior Nicole Moniello found the back of the net just moments later to tie the game up at 1-1. However, Mercy immediately responded to go back on top and totaled 14 first-half goals to head into the break with a 14-1 lead. The Mavericks then added three more goals in the second half, while keeping the Knights off the scoreboard in the half.
Moniello continues to be a bright spot for Queens, picking up her team-leading sixth goal and seventh point of the young season.
Four Mavericks put together multi-goal games. Emily Jehle scored twice, while tallying five assists to lead the way. Hunter Isnardi, Katherine Sanchez and Alexa Haines also posted multiple goals for Mercy. The Mavericks held major advantages in shots (31-8) and draw controls (12-2).
Next for Queens will be a road matchup at Pace University on Monday, March 27, at 7 p.m.
