FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2018) – An early 9-0 run put the Queens College women's basketball team in a hole that the Knights could not come back from, as QC fell by a 67-51 score to Bridgeport on Saturday (Dec. 15) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Lucy Tougas led the Knights (2-8, 1-3 ECC) with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists while Analeza Edore scored ten points off the bench with a team-high eight rebounds. Beth Bonin added eight points and four rebounds with Emer Moloney contributing seven points for Queens in the loss.
Gianna Gotti's game-high 23 points came off the bench for Bridgeport (6-4, 3-1 ECC) with the freshman guard also posting five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Samnell Vonleh added 14 points and nine rebounds and NK Ilang had eleven points and six boards for UB in the win. Sarah Middleton dished out six assists while Briana Stoddart contributed eight points.
Bridgeport made three of its first four baskets in the opening quarter, with a second-chance three-pointer from Andrea Terranova giving the visitors a 9-0 lead after the first three minutes of action. Tougas scored her first points on a jumper with 6:45 to play in the frame, and the sophomore would score ten points in the opening quarter alone. Queens came within three points down with a minute to play after free throws from Emer Moloney brought the Knights within a 17-14 deficit. Gotti would go on a personal 8-2 run to set up Bridgeport with a 25-15 lead after one period of play. Queens pulled within four points down with six-and-a-half minutes remaining in the second quarter, but a 9-2 run by the Purple Knights punctuated with a three-ball from Stoddart sent Bridgeport into the halftime break up 34-23.
Queens could not step into high gear in the second half, falling behind by eighteen points after the end of the third quarter; the team did get within nine points down towards the end of the fourth quarter but time would run out on QC's comeback attempt.
The Knights will host American International College on Wednesday (Dec. 19) at 7 p.m. in the final home event of the calendar year.
