FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2018) – A late second-half run iced the contest and sent the Queens College women's basketball team to a 69-47 loss against LIU Post on Saturday (Dec. 8) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
After a sluggish start by both teams, Queens (1-7, 0-2 ECC) got on the board first with Beth Bonin sinking a jumper as the clock ticked down to two minutes gone by in the period. The Knights led 4-0 on a Lucy Tougas lay-up two minutes later but LIU Post (8-1, 2-0 ECC) chipped away at the first-quarter advantage to grab an 11-10 edge with one minute to play in the period on free throws. The Pioneers held a 15-10 lead to end the first quarter, buoyed by an 8-0 run that was mostly foul shots as LIU Post went to the line twenty-five times in the opening half of play. The Knights chipped away at the deficit, as buckets by Bonin and Emer Moloney brought the team within three points at 17-14 with a minute gone by in the quarter. After LIU Post put up a few more points, Queens chipped away once again with Moloney and Maia Fawcett bringing the team within four points at 25-21 and a Bonin three-pointer had QC down by just one at the mid-point of the period. However, LIU Post would end the half on a 17-2 run to take a 42-23 lead at the break.
The Pioneers opened the second half with six straight points as Sasha Patterson and Shannon Doyle took control of the paint. The Knights would get as close as 16 points down in the third quarter but a Dominique Williams three-pointer and a Ja'lyn Armstrong lay-up at the quarter-horn would keep the Pioneers safely ahead. The Knights would not get any closer in the fourth quarter.
Fawcett led QC with eight points off the bench with Bonin and Analeza Edore pitching in seven points apiece. Edore added seven rebounds and Bonin collected four assists and four steals in the effort. My'eesa Grant added six points and six rebounds for the Knights, as well.
Doyle led all scorers and the Pioneers with 15 points, Armstrong added 13 and Taylah Hudson had 12 points. Sasha Patterson added ten points and twelve rebounds for a double-double and Doyle also posted a five-steal afternoon. Anita Mikowski had five points off the bench for LIU Post in the win.
Queens will next be in action on Wednesday (Dec. 12) as the Knights head up to Dobbs Ferry to face Mercy College in an ECC tilt at 5 p.m.
