FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2018) – The Queens College women's basketball team struggled to maintain pace with a streaky Southern Connecticut team as the Knights lost an 83-60 decision to the Owls on Sunday (Nov. 25) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The Knights (1-4) opened the contest on a 6-0 run as My'eesa Grant made two lay-ups surrounding a pair of free throws from Lucy Tougas in the opening ninety seconds of play. Queens pushed its lead to a 12-4 mark with three minutes gone by in the quarter after a knockdown jumper by Tougas, and the Knights held a 14-8 lead with four minutes remaining in the frame on free throws from Lakeisha Officer. Southern Connecticut (5-0) ended the frame on a 10-2 run with jumpers by Aaliyah Walker book-ending the spurt despite the Owls going 0-for-7 from long range in the first quarter of play.
Tougas opened the second quarter by hitting a jump shot but the Owls responded with a 6-0 run as SCSU took a 24-18 lead in the first three minutes of play. Queens then scored seven straight points with a three-ball from Beth Bonin giving the Knights a 25-24 lead for a possession; Amanda Pfohl finally hit a three-pointer for the Owls after the team missed its first eleven long-range jumpers and Southern Connecticut was back in front by a 27-25 score at the mid-point of the period. The trifecta started a run of nine consecutive points for the visitors as Pfohl, Walker and Imani Wheeler all converted on shots to put SCSU up 33-25 until Bonin answered out of a time-out for Queens. The Knights trailed at the halftime break by a 40-32 margin, with the single-digit deficit coming only on account of a Tougas lay-up being the final points of the half.
Queens went cold to start the second half, hitting just two shots out of seven attempts in the first five minutes of play with Bonin and Nora Gabel hitting buckets to keep the Knights within ten points at 46-36. SCSU went on a 10-0 run over the next ninety seconds, however, to surge in front by a 56-36 margin. QC answered with a 9-0 run as Grant, Tougas and Maia Fawcett worked to bring the Knights back within striking distance but the Owls ended the third quarter of play up 66-48. Queens would not get closer than that margin the rest of the way.
Bonin led the Knights with 12 points on a 5-for-18 shooting performance from the field while Tougas added 11 points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Grant pitched in with a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) as Fawcett contributed ten points and four assists. Emer Moloney had her second straight double-digit rebound outburst with 11 boards to go along with seven points. Queens shot 23-of-59 (40%) from the floor and was outrebounded by a 44-37 margin.
The Owls' starting five (Walker, Pfohl, Wheeler, Jessica Fressle and Kiana Steinauer) combined for 75 of the visitors' 83 points with Fressle pacing the team for a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds. Walker nearly had a triple-double with 16 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds while Steinauer added a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). Southern Connecticut shot 47% (36-76) from the floor but capitalized on 21 QC turnovers for 28 points to grab the victory.
The Queens College women's basketball team returns to action on Friday (Nov. 30) with the Knights traveling to Bronxville to face the Concordia (NY) Clippers at 5 p.m.
