ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2018) – At the East Coast Conference awards banquet on Friday (Mar. 2) in Rochester, Queens College sophomore guard Beth Bonin was named to the All-ECC Women's Basketball First Team while senior guard Merrick Rowland earned a spot on the All-ECC Second Team.
Bonin led the Knights to the No. 5 seed in the ECC Tournament following two 24-point games in QC's final two regular-season games, which were both wins. She had a team-best 16 points per game average and played in almost 1,000 minutes on the year (36.9 minutes per game was second-most in the conference). The sophomore made 64 threes, which was third-most in the ECC and 149 field goals (sixth-most) and her 432 total points were also sixth-most in the East Coast Conference. Bonin poured in ten or more points in 23 games with a career-high 27 points coming against Daemen on Feb. 18 that immediately preceded her two 24-point performances. Additionally, she pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds versus Mercy on Jan. 10 before grabbing 11 rebounds and hitting a buzzer-beating three-pointer to win a 62-59 thriller at Bridgeport on Jan. 13.
Rowland, meanwhile, earned her spot on the All-ECC Second Team thanks to a heroic year of adversity and triumph. The senior ranked second on the squad with a 12.7 points per game average and was fourth in the conference with 56 made three-pointers. Rowland scored a career-high 32 points in a 74-66 win over Bloomfield back on Nov. 22; she had 22 points against Mercy on Jan. 10. While nagging injuries hampered her down the stretch, the senior gritted out plenty of valuable minutes for the Knights on their run to the playoffs and also scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 3 versus NYIT.
