FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2018) – The Queens College women's basketball team rallied from an 11-point deficit on Saturday (Feb. 24) to knock off Bridgeport by a 50-44 final score and end the regular season on a high for seniors Merrick Rowland and Marina Ramon Lopez.
Queens(13-13, 9-9 ECC) had clinched a playoff spot on Wednesday evening and will await Sunday's results to see where they will play as either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in next week's East Coast Conference Tournament. Meanwhile, Bridgeport finishes the year with a 9-19 overall record and a 6-12 mark in ECC play.
Offensive output was lacking in the first half on both sides as the teams struggled to find the bottom of the hoop in the first two-and-a-half minutes of play. Beth Bonin scored the first two points for the Knights and Marina Ramon Lopez had a bucket a minute later to give QC a 4-0 lead. Bridgeport responded with back-to-back baskets to tie the score; following another Bonin lay-up and a free throw from Emer Moloney, Brianna Stoddart knocked down a three-pointer to end the first quarter with a 7-7 tie.
In the second quarter, the teams traded the first twelve points of action as the scoreboard read 13-all with under eight minutes to go in the half. The Purple Knights then went on a 14-3 run fueled by three-pointers from Andrea Terranova, Sofia Ermeidou and Brianna Stoddart. Bridgeport led 27-16 at the half thanks to a buzzer-beating lay-up by Kadijah Dickson as the Knights were held to a 7-for-28 (25%) shooting percentage in the opening half.
QC started the second half on a 7-0 run thanks to buckets by Kaitlyn Mahon and Ramon Lopez as Bonin also hit a three-ball in that spurt. Bridgeport continued to hold a lead that was growing slimmer and slimmer by the minute but Jaqualah Holliman knocked down a three to give UB a 38-33 edge with under two minutes remaining in the quarter. QC ended the frame on a 6-0 run with Bonin and Rowland leading the Knights' charge to a 39-38 lead as the fourth quarter commenced.
Bridgeport re-took the lead on a lay-up from Sarah Middleton as UB's one-point advantage held until just about the midway point of the quarter. With six-and-a-half minutes remaining, Queens went on a 9-2 run to close out the contest as Bridgeport could not answer with Rowland turning on the jets and leading her squad to a big win on Senior Day.
Bonin shined with a 24-point outing on a 10-for-20 shooting performance from the field, adding six rebounds and three assists to her ledger. Rowland and Ramon Lopez combined for 14 points in their final regular season home game at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Morgen Caution had nine points and 13 rebounds to lead Bridgeport.
