Bonin's 20 Points and Rowland's 16 Not Enough for Women's Basketball in 60-52 Loss at NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2018) – Despite a one-point lead at halftime, the Queens College women's basketball team succumbed to a strong second half from NYIT as the Bears defeated the Knights 60-52 on Wednesday (Feb. 7) in Old Westbury.

Queens (10-11, 6-7 ECC) got things going in the unfriendly confines of Recreation Hall as Beth Bonin nailed a three-pointer on the game's first possession. The Knights would lead NYIT (14-9, 8-5 ECC) for the first four minutes of play until back-to-back trebles by Shalie Frierson and Nina Vukosavljevic put the Bears ahead by a 12-7 score midway through the quarter. Corinn Baggs netter a jumper to put NYIT up 14-7 with 2:22 to play in the quarter, but Queens ended the frame on a 10-0 run as Bonin and Merrick Rowland hit threes to bring the Knights back within one; Rowland and Lucy Tougas scored on two-point buckets as QC held a 17-14 lead after a period of play.

In the second quarter, NYIT stubbornly fought back to tie the score at 20-all with two minutes played in the frame. Nalae Crosland put Queens back ahead with a lay-up and Bonin followed up with another trifecta to push the Knights' lead to five points at 25-20. Later in the period, Baggs and Maia Hood converted consecutive chances in the paint and brought the Bears within a point at 27-26. The sides traded free throws to end the half, and QC went into the locker room with a 29-28 edge.

Bonin opened the third quarter with a three-ball and Rowland connected on a lay-up to give QC a 34-28 lead with less than a minute gone by in the frame. The Knights led for most of the third quarter, repelling NYIT as Rowland hit another jumper with under four minutes left in the period to give QC a 40-39 lead. Frierson, however, ended the scoring in the third quarter as a three-point play put the Bears ahead 45-42 going into the final frame. Queens opened the fourth with a 6-0 run as Crosland, Bonin and Tougas each hit lay-ups to put the Knights up 48-45 with eight minutes left in regulation. NYIT was quick to respond with a 7-0 rally as Baggs and Vukosavljevic were the catalysts in putting their side up 52-48 just two minutes later. That would be enough to keep the hosts in front for good as Queens got as close as two points before the Bears pulled away in the final seconds.

Bonin collected 20 points for the Knights in the loss, hitting 6-of-16 from the floor and knocking down four three-pointers. The sophomore guard added five assists and five rebounds in the effort. Rowland had a 16-point night with five rebounds as well. The Knights shot 46% (6-13) from the three-point line but only hit 55% (6-11) from the free throw line.

NYIT was led by a 24-point showing from Vukosavljevic, who also nabbed four steals and had seven rebounds and four assists. Baggs (12 points, 12 rebounds), and Hood (12 & 11) collected double-doubles for the Bears in the win as the hosts were plus-14 (48-34) in the rebounding margin on the evening. NYIT was also plus-14 in the points in the paint statistic (38-24).

The Queens College women's basketball team will host its annual Pink Game on Saturday (Feb. 10) as the Knights welcome LIU Post to Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
