Second-Half Heroes! Tougas, Rowland and Company Lead Women's Basketball Over Daemen, 70-60

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2018) – A heroic comeback led by Merrick Rowland and Lucy Tougas spurred the Queens College women's basketball team to a 70-60 triumph over Damen College on Sunday (Jan. 21) at Lucille Kvallos Court in Flushing.

Queens (8-8, 4-4 ECC) opened the first quarter by scoring first on an unusually sweltering Sunday inside the confines of Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Marina Ramon Lopez had the game's first bucket but Daemen (7-12, 4-5 ECC) would answer with six straight points. After a three-pointer by Caroline White, the Wildcats held a 9-4 lead with four-and-a-half minutes to play in the frame. QC collected a 6-2 run to end the first quarter with shots by Tougas, Ramon Lopez and Beth Bonin; Daemen, however, scored the last points of the stanza with a jumper by Carina Pringle giving the visitors an 11-10 lead after one period of play.

Daemen boosted itself to a 16-10 lead to start the second quarter following a three by Pringle and a jumper from Sarah Young in the first minute of action. The Wildcats led 20-14 midway through the period before the Knights posted a 7-0 run punctuated by a three-point play from Taliyah Hopkins that gave Queens a 21-20 lead with 3:17 to go in the half. The lead would pinball back and forth with Sarah Saba converting a three-point play in the dying seconds of the half to put Daemen ahead 28-26 at the halftime break.

The Wildcats held a 33-28 lead in the third quarter following a three-point conversion by Saba but the third period belonged to Queens as the Knights outscored the opposition by a 28-12 margin. Rowland, who went 0-for-5 from the field in the first half, caught fire by hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point line including a big one with just over a minute to play in the frame that put QC ahead by a 52-38 margin. The Knights led 54-40 going into the final period of play but Daemen would make a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter; a Filbert lay-up midway through the frame got the Wildcats within seven points at 56-49 but the visitors never got closer than six points away as the Knights had just enough to outlast the opposition.

Bonin led the way 20 points, hitting 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the late stages of the game to elevate the Knights to a win. Rowland had 15 points and Ramon Lopez scored 14 points as well, but Tougas had herself a game with eight points off the bench to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Ramon Lopez grabbed ten rebounds to record another double-double in the win as Emer Moloney played a pivotal role with seven points and six assists to boot.

Daemen was led by 17-point efforts from Filbert and Saba but the two combined to shoot 14-for-33 from the field. Pringle added seven points and six assists for the Wildcats in the loss.

Queens returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 24) when the Knights host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 5:30 p.m. in a game that will be streamed live on ESPN3 as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase.
