BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Jan. 13, 2018) – Sophomore guard Beth Bonin knocked down a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer as the Queens College women's basketball team survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback from Bridgeport to stun the Purple Knights and grab a 62-59 victory on Saturday (Jan. 13) in an East Coast Conference match-up at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.
Queens (7-7, 3-3 ECC) opened the scoring in the game's first minute as Marina Ramon Lopez scored on a lay-up to put the visitors in front. The teams went back and forth with the Knights always leading and the Purple Knights fighting back to tie the score until Merrick Rowland hit a three-pointer with six minutes to play in the frame, giving Queens a 9-6 lead. After Sofia Ermeidou hit a jumper at the mid-point of the period to bring Bridgeport (5-13, 2-6 ECC) within a point at 11-10, QC ended the first quarter on a 9-2 run with Ramon Lopez and Beth Bonin doing all the scoring damage. In particular, Bonin converted a three-point play with 56 seconds to go to give the Knights an 18-10 lead and Ramon Lopez rattled home a jumper just a few seconds later to give QC a ten-point lead. UB ended the first quarter with a lay-up by Andrea Terranova to bring the host Purple Knights within eight points at the end of one.
The offense then went completely cold for both teams at Hubbell Gymnasium, with a lay-in by UB's Sarah Middleton the only points scored by either side for about four minutes in the second quarter. The scoring drought ended for both sides, but the field goal drought did not cease for Queens until Bonin scored on a lay-up with 3:22 to play in the first half. That bucket, however, put QC up by a 24-16 score and snapped an 0-for-6 shooting drought by the Knights from the field. Middleton was not to be denied, however, as back-to-back jumpers brought Bridgeport within four points at 24-20 with two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the quarter. Free throws by Rowland and Nalae Crosland off-set more points from Bridgeport as the first half ended with the Knights ahead by a 27-23 margin.
Queens began the third quarter on an 11-4 run, with nine of those points coming from Ramon Lopez including a three-point play in the first thirty seconds of the period. A lay-up by Emer Moloney gave QC its largest lead of the game at 38-27 midway through the third, but the Purple Knights would strike for a 12-3 run with Middleton, Kadijah Dickson and Nicole Johnson each scoring four points to cut the deficit to a 41-39 margin at the end of the third quarter. QC started the fourth quarter strong as Moloney knocked down a bucket to give the Knights a 43-39 edge; Rowland hit a jumper that upped the visitors' lead to six points at 45-39 half-a-minute later.
Another bucket by Rowland put Queens in the driver's seat with a 47-38 lead and 7:30 remaining in regulation. The hits kept on coming for QC as Ramon Lopez, Rowland and Bonin contributed to a 7-0 run that forced Bridgeport to call a time-out with the visitors up 54-40 at the mid-point of the fourth quarter. The Purple Knights, however, went on an 18-5 run to close the gap to a one-point deficit with 13 seconds remaining. Gerald was fouled by Bonin with six seconds remaining, but hit just one of three free throws to tie the game at 59; she missed the third one, and Bonin motored around several UB defenders to hit a running three from the top of the key as time expired to notch the 'W' for the Knights.
Ramon Lopez led Queens with a near double-double, and she also hit 50% (9-of-18) of her shots from the field. Bonin had another double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Rowland added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Dickson had 24 points for Bridgeport in the loss, hitting 10-of-18 from the field.
Queens will return to action on Friday (Jan. 19) to host Roberts Wesleyan at Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
