BRIDGEPORT, CT - In her Queens College debut, freshmen Beth Bonin exploded for 28 points as the No. 18 Queens College women's basketball held off the Owls of Southern Connecticut State 90-86 in the team's season opener from Hubbell Gym.
Bonin shot 10-for-16 from the field in the contest, including 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. Senior MacKenzie Rowland racked up 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two key blocks in the contest. After finding herself in early foul trouble, senior Madison Rowland registered 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Off the bench, junior Melissa Fumano scored 12 points, aided by a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, to go along with nine rebounds.
Mac. Rowland opening the scoring with a layup just 12 seconds into the game. The Knights took a 5-0 lead within the first 1:22 minutes of the first quarter. After an Imani Wheeler layup gave the Owls a 16-11 lead, Bonin responded with a three pointer to cut the QC deficit to two, 16-14. A Mac. Rowland layup tied the game at 16 with 2:15 left. Bonin and Mac. Rowland closed the first quarter with another three pointer and layup as the Knights took a four point lead into the second quarter.
The Knights took a nine point lead early in the second quarter after a layup from Mad. Rowland. The Owls refused to go away as a Taylor McLaughlin layup cut the lead down to seven, 37-30, before a Mad. Rowland free throw put the Knights up eight. A jumper by McLaughlin brought SCSU within six. Wheeler's layup cut the lead to five, 41-36, to close out the second quarter. The duo of Bonin and Mac. Rowland were the story of the first half as they paced the Knights with 14 points coming from Mac. Rowland, while Bonin scored 12 points displaying her long range with a 3-for-5 effort from beyond the arc.
Early foul trouble in the second half by the Knights allowed the Owls to get back in the game. Maria Weselyj knocked down back-to-back threes to bring the Owls within one, 49-48. After a pair of successful free throws from Fumano put the Knights up 61-57 with 2:44 left in the third quarter, the Owls closed out the quarter with a 8-2 run to take a 65-62 lead going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a back and forth contest as the Knights and Owls exchanged leads left and right. Sophomore Kaitlyn Mahon put the Knights up 84-82 by knocking down two free throws. After a Mac. Rowland layup gave the Knights a 86-84 lead, a steal by Mad. Rowland gave QC a stop on the defensive end. She also knocked down the last four points of the game to close out the game as QC picked up their first win of the season.
Three players paced the Owls as McLaughlin scored a game high 29 points, while Weselyj scored 17 points and Abby Hurlbert scored 14 points.
