Lady Knights title run derailed in Regionals

The Lady Knights most successful season of the last two decades came to a conclusion in Philadelphia on Friday night in the NCAA Regionals. Second seed Holy Family handed seventh seeded Queens College a 74-43 defeat, leaving the Lady Knights with a final record of 24-7.

The 43 point output by QC was their second lowest of the season. Amanda Bartlett led the offense with 12 points while Jennifer DiChiara, in her last collegiate outing, added 11 points and grabbed eight boards.

The Lady Knights hung tough early as Janine Maser scored five of their first seven points to keep her team within four points of Holy Family at 11-7 with 13:14 left. QC suffered a big blow to the chances when DiChiara was called for her second foul with the Lady Knights behind 15-7. DiChiara went  to the bench with only two points in ten minutes on the court.

QC continued to hang close with their second leading scorer on the sidelines, pulling to within 17-15 on a bucket by Brittany Faherty with 8:10 left. However, Holy Family finished the half on a 18-7 run to take a commanding 35-22 lead into the intermission. Stifling defense on the part of Holy Family held the Lady Knights to just 30.8% from the field while forcing QC 10 turnovers.

Holy Family put the game out of reach by scoring the first eight points of the second half. Senior Bethanie Mandresh scored the final points of the season in her last game in a Lady Knights uniform when she drained a three pointer with six seconds left in the 2008-2009 campaign.
