BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Apr. 12, 2018) - The Queens College softball team managed just eight hits over two games on Thursday (Apr. 12) as the Knights lost a doubleheader to Bridgeport in East Coast Conference action at Seaside Park.
The Purple Knights (17-17, 4-8 ECC) defeated QC (9-13, 6-8 ECC) 3-1 in the opening contest before winning a 6-3 nightcap to earn the sweep over the Knights.
Game One: Bridgeport 3, Queens (NY) 1
A scoreless game after two-and-a-half innings, UB broke through in the bottom of the third against Knights starter ToniMarie Valeriano (5-6) with three runs in the frame. Following back-to-back singles and a passed ball to commence the inning, Samantha Sabor cracked an RBI double to left field to bring home Allison Luzzi with the game's first run. Valeriano recorded an out as Kamryn Beach fouled out to the left side of the infield, but Kaira Ramon laced a single down the right field line in the very next at-bat to bring home two more runs and give UB the 3-0 edge. Valeriano doubled home Alyssa Neal in the top of the sixth inning to cancel the shutout but Queens was stifled by Bridgeport starter Amanda Staheli (8-6), who fanned 11 batters on the afternoon in the victory for the Purple Knights. Danielle D'Angelo recorded a double for QC while Lauren Pascual, Ann Grimshaw and Alyssa Neal each picked up singles as well.
Game Two: Bridgeport 6, Queens (NY) 3
The Purple Knights systematically built up a 4-0 lead on Queens in the second game of the doubleheader, beginning their run production on an RBI groundout from Sabor in the first inning to score Luzzi. QC starter Vanessa Juengerkes (4-5) held Bridgeport to a single run until the fourth inning as a two-out rally by the hosts was capped off by an RBI single off the bat of Stephanie Dean to double the Purple Knights' margin of lead. The Knights were one-hit through five as UB starter Ashley Eisnor (6-10) pitched effectively to keep the visitors at bay and in the bottom of the fifth inning, run-scoring singles by Beach and Yalitza Rodriguez gave Bridgeport the aformentioned 4-0 advantage. The Knights rallied back in the sixth, tagging Eisnor for three runs as Valeriano doubled home pinch runner Maryjane D'Agostino before Alyssa Delaney stroked an opposite-field single to bring home two runs and cut the deficit to one. UB, however, scored two in the bottom of the frame on a single from Elyssa Marmolejo and a Sabor sacrifice fly to create the final margin.
Queens is next in action on Saturday (Apr. 14) as the Knights head to Dobbs Ferry for a doubleheader with the Mavericks of Mercy College. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
