Softball Slotted Sixth in East Coast Conference Preseason Poll

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2018) - The Queens College softball team will begin its 2018 campaign with the No. 6 ranking in the East Coast Conference preseason poll, as the league made it final spring sports preseason release on Friday (Jan. 26).

The Knights went 13-17 last season with a 10-14 mark in ECC play and welcomed Amy Delmore back to the dugout as the team's head coach back in September. The 2015 ECC Coach of the Year also led QC to its first-ever East Coast Conference Tournament championship and brings an 81-61-1 record back to Flushing for this season.

Queens brings back a good majority of its players from last year's team, led by last year's First-Team All-ECC player at first base in now-senior ToniMarie Valeriano. The two-way player who also spends time in the circle as a pitcher posted a team-high .365 batting average with ten doubles, two home runs and thirteen runs batted in at the plate; on the mound, she pitched to a team-best 2.97 earned-run average and threw a dominant strikeout-to-walk ratio of 60:12. The Knights will have to replace much of its power in the lineup as the team lost three players (Kayla Morrissey, Stevianne Ognibene and Kristen Boody) that combined for 65% of the squad's 20 home runs. Senior pitcher/designated player Vanessa Juengerkes is also back for Queens after posting a 7-5 overall record in the circle and hitting .298 with two triples and six RBI's as well.

The 2018 schedule for the Knights begins on Mar. 6 as Queens travels to New Haven to face a Chargers team that was an NCAA Tournament participant in 2017 following a 30-16 season. After an early-season conference double-header with NYIT on Mar. 21, Queens opens up its home schedule by taking on Bridgeport on Mar. 27 before heading to Rockville Centre to face Molloy on Mar. 29. The Knights then host three straight double-dips with Mercy (Mar. 31), Holy Family (Apr. 2) and LIU Post (Apr. 5) all visiting Flushing. Five of the next six opponents will be road-trips for QC with a home doubleheader against NYIT on Apr. 8 breaking up the long trek and the Knights will close out the year with three non-conference doubleheaders at home against Bloomfield (Apr. 24), Caldwell (Apr. 26) and Merrimack (Apr. 29).
