Rini's triple helps QC win game one over STAC, 9-7

Jill Rini cleared the bases with a one out triple in the seventh to put Queens College ahead for good in a 9-7 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College in game one of a doubleheader in Flushing on Thursday. STAC rebounded to edge the Lady Knights in game two, 4-3.

STAC scored three in the first and added single runs in the second and fourth to open up a 5-0 lead in the opener. Katie Miracco, Danielle DiGioia and Sara Koumou each drove in a run in the fifth to cut STAC's lead to 5-3 before the Lady Knights erupted for six in the seventh to go ahead 9-5. Bryttne Nelson knocked in Miracco with the first run of the inning before Rini's bases clearing three bagger gave QC their first lead of the day at 7-5. Christina Colon then capped the rally with her fourth homer of the year, scoring Rini. Joy Ferriello of STAC made it close by depositing one over the left field fence with one aboard but Nelson fanned the next two batters to preserve the win for QC.

In the nightcap the two teams exchanged runs in the first before the Lady Knights put two on the board in the top of the second on RBI singles by Roseann Mercurio and Samantha Stallone to take a 3-1 lead. That would be all the scoring for the day for QC as STAC tied the score in the third on a two run shot by Heather Clausen and won it on an RBI single in the sixth by Angelina Squillini.
