Split Decision in Softball Home Openers

The Lady Knights played the first doubleheader on their new field on Friday with mixed results. QC rallied behind a fine peformance by pitcher Victoria Coan to take the nightcap from Bloomfield College, 2-1, after dropping the opener 5-3.

Coan struck out three and surrendered five hits in picking up the win. Her only misstep came on the game's first batter when Vickie Berardi hit a home run to give Bloomfield an early lead. The score remained 1-0 until two outs in the fourth when Adriana Faria knotted the game with a solo home run. Two innings later, Bryttne Nelson started the winning rally with a two bagger. Nelson was then replaced by a pinch runner, Christy Sanders, who scored when an infield hit off the bat of Sara Koumou.

Earlier in the afternoon QC got off on the right foot in the first inning of game one when Danielle DiGioia doubled home Christina Colon with the first run of the day. A homer by Nicole Cagnino capped a two run rally in the fourth that put BC up 2-1. The visitors added another run in the sixth before the Lady Knights tied the score at three with a pair of runs in their half of the inning. Samantha Stallone singled home Nelson and when the left fielder hesitated, Laura Guzman snuck home with the tying run.

The deadlock was short lived as Bloomfield scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to win the opener, 5-3. Colon and Nelson each had a pair of hits in the game for QC.
