Softball concludes Southern swing with two more wins
The Lady Knights wrapped up the most successful Florida trip in their history by picking up two more victories on Monday in the National Training Center Games. QC hung on for a 9-7 win over St. Michael's in the first game and rallied for a 4-1 victory later in the morning over Merrimack, enabling them to head north with a record of 5-1.
The left side of the defense provided much of the offense as the Lady Knights scored two in the first, three in the second and three more in the third to open up a 8-0 lead on St. Michael's. Third baseman Sara Koumou had four hits and two RBI in four at bats and shortstop Jillian Rini drove in three and scored three on a single and triple in three at bats to pace a 16 hit attack. St. Michael's made it interesting by scoring two in the fifth and five in the sixth but QC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win. Bryttne Nelson improved to 3-0 on the season with 5.2 innings of two hit, shutout ball.
Christy Sanders matched up with Atlee Cahill of Merrimack in a pitchers duel in QC's second game of the day. Both pitchers tossed goose eggs until Jill Gagnon drove in Jill Richard, who had doubled to lead off the sixth, with a two out single. The Lady Knights answered right back, using RBI singles by Adriana Faria and Destiny Ocasio to take a 2-1 lead. Samantha Stallone then gave Sanders two more runs to work with when she singled home Faria and Ocasio to put QC ahead 4-1. Sanders, who fanned nine, made the lead stand up to improve her record to 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA for the young season.
