Hicks tosses three hit shutout in split with Holy Family

Senior Jessica Hicks pitched a three hit shutout to record a 1-0 win over Holy Family University in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader played in Old Westbury, New York on Sunday. Holy Family rallied to take game one, 8-5, in eight innings.

A two run single by Katie Miracco highlighted a four run sixth inning that gave QC a 4-1 lead in the opener. Unfortunately for the Lady Knights, Holy Family responded with three runs in the seventh to tie and four more in the extra frame to pull ahead, 8-4. QC could only answer with a single run in the bottom of the eighth in the loss. Allison Castellucci was three for five while Katie Karpinski and Miracco each had two hits for Queens College in game one.

The second game of the double dip remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. Nicole Mancusi, who began the Lady Knights rally with a single, advanced to second when Danielle DiGioia reached on an error by the second baseman. Both runners moved up a base on a Miracco ground out, setting the stage for pinch hitter Sara Koumou. With one out and runners on second and third, Koumou came through with a base hit, scoring Mancusi with the winning run. Jessica Hicks struck out five in going the distance for the victory.
