SURPRISE! Men's Tennis Headed to Arizona after 5-2 Triumph over NYIT in NCAA East II Regional Final

FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 1, 2018) - Roman Laga and Lucas Martinez won their respective singles matches within a matter of seconds, setting off a wild celebration as the Queens College men's tennis team punched its ticket to the Round of 16 with a 5-2 win over NYIT in the NCAA Division II East Regional Final on Tuesday (May 1).

The Knights picked up their 20th win on the season and will join the QC women's tennis team in Surprise, Az. on May 8-12 for the NCAA Division II Tournament as both teams won their respective regional brackets.

QC led after doubles competition by a 2-1 score despite the Knights losing at the top tandem. Gabriel Mendez and Martinez were defeated in an 8-5 decision by the Bears' Rares Ispas and Francisco Caldas. The third-doubles match was next to finish with Laga and Jose Zurro rolling to an 8-4 victory against Jean Kehayhan and Sergio Fernandez. The Knights broke the tie at second-doubles with Cosme Jubera and Richard Sec besting Matej Selecky and Maxton Cook by a final margin of 8-2.

Singles play also favored the Knights with Zurro crushing Kevin Huynh at sixth-singles by a 6-2, 6-0 margin to put the Knights ahead 3-1. While Jubera's match at the No. 2 flight with Caldas and Sec's contest at fourth-singles against Cook were going back-and-forth, results at No. 1, 3 and 5 dictated the final score of the match. Selecky knocked off Mendez at the top flight by scores of 6-3, 6-2 to bring NYIT within a point at 3-2; Laga and Martinez, however, were both up a set by the time the first match was over. Laga won over Ispas in the first set 6-3 and Martinez held a 6-3 first-set edge over Fernandez as well. With both matches being watched with great interest, Laga won his second set 6-4 to put Queens on the verge of victory. Not a mere thirty seconds later, Martinez broke Fernandez and won a 6-2 second-set to clinch the match and begin the party.

The Knights will find out later this week which team they will be facing in Arizona. Be sure to check out for all the latest information.
