FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2018) - The Queens College men's tennis team wrapped up its regular season on a high, squashing Salem International on Wednesday (Apr. 18) by a 9-0 score at the QC Tennis Center on Senior Day.
All of the Knights' seniors played a major part in the team's seventeenth victory of the season, beginning in doubles play. Lucas Martinez and Gabriel Mendez teamed together at the top tandem of doubles, and the seniors put on a show with an 8-5 win over Patryk Garwacki and Gregor Lanier. Senior Roman Laga partnered up with Jose Zurro at second-doubles to send home the Padillas (Carlos and Andres) by an 8-3 score and senior Miguel Bendito paired with Richard Sec for an 8-3 win at third doubles against Ivan Arevalo and Antonio Shaw.
Singles play was a showcase of dominance for the Knights with Laga needing a first-set tiebreak to beat Garwacki by a 7-6 margin before dispatching of the freshman by a 6-1 score in the second set in the top flight. Sec defeated Lanier 6-3, 6-0 at second-singles with Hugo Andrade rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arevalo at the No. 3 position. Martinez earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Carlos Padilla while Andres Padilla took just one more game before losing at fifth-singles to Bendito of the Knights by a 6-1, 6-2 margin. At No. 6 singles, Stanislas Bedrune dropped Eugene Bour by a 6-2, 6-0 scoreline.
The Knights also honored women's tennis senior Emy Alplund in a pre-match ceremony with the women's team playing an exhibition against SIU on Wednesday as well.
The QC men's tennis team is the No. 2 seed in the upcoming East Coast Conference Tournament and will face off with No. 3 UDC on Friday (Apr. 20) at 2 p.m. in the second semifinal of the day.
