FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2018) - The Queens College men's tennis team regained its stride after Friday's difficult loss to NYIT by overpowering regional foe Chestnut Hill on Sunday (Apr. 15) to the tune of a 7-2 victory at the QC Tennis Center.
Queens (16-5) went 2-1 in doubles play against Chestnut Hill (9-7) with Richard Sec and Cosme Jubera garnering a convincing 8-0 shutout in the No. 2 tandem over Jesus Darias and Antoine Gautier of the Griffins. Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez also picked up a win, albeit a tougher 9-7 victory at first doubles, for the Knights in the early stages of the match. QC nearly pulled out a doubles sweep but Roman Laga and Jose Zurro were bested 9-8 (7-5) in third doubles by Felix Andre and Adam Gavin to put Chestnut Hill on the board.
Singles play began with Laga scoring the first point at the No. 3 flight, beating Lucas Bacoletto by a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set decision. The Knights then picked off their foes one-by-one with Zurro scoring a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against Pedro Regalin. Mendez was next to complete his straight-set singles win, quieting Andre by a 6-3, 6-1 score while Martinez took down Gavin in fifth singles (6-2, 6-4). Jubera closed out Darias in a gritty 6-4, 7-5 win at second-singles but Sec dropped a tight three-setter to Gautier to end the match as the fourth-singles flight finished at 6-4, 4-6, 0-1 (4-10).
The Knights will host Salem International University on Wednesday (Apr. 18) at 10 a.m. in a doubleheader featuring the QC women's tennis team as well.
