Men's Tennis Falls in ECC Regular-Season Finale at NYIT, 5-4; Knights No. 2 Seed in Upcoming ECC Tournament

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2018) - It came down to the final singles match on Friday (Apr. 13) but the Queens College men's tennis team was defeated by NYIT in a 5-4 battle that decided the East Coast Conference regular-season championship.

The match started well for the Knights (15-5, 4-1 ECC) as Queens won at second and third doubles tandems. Richard Sec and Cosme Jubera were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles while Roman Laga and Jose Zurro scored an 8-4 win at the third pairing; Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez fell 9-8 (4) in the first doubles match-up, however. The Knights were frustrated in singles play with only Laga and Sec winning their match-ups at third and fifth singles respectively. Zurro's sixth-singles match proved to be the decisive point as Alexandre Martinez of NYIT claimed a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win to give the Bears the victory.

Queens, which hosts the ECC Men's Tennis Championship next weekend, will be the No. 2 seed in the four-team playoff and will be hosting UDC on Friday (Apr. 20). However, the Knights will first host Chestnut Hill on Sunday (Apr. 15) at 5 p.m. and Salem International University on Wednesday (Apr. 18) at 10 a.m. Sunday's match-up is Senior Day as the Knights will honor Laga, Mendez, Martinez and Miguel Bendito.
