Men's Tennis Passes Stern Test with Flying Colors, Knocks Off Roberts Wesleyan by 9-0 Decision

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2018) - Despite two difficult contests in doubles, the Queens College men's tennis team won its second consecutive conference match on Saturday (Mar. 24) by rolling over Roberts Wesleyan in a 9-0 victory at the QC Tennis Center.

Queens (12-3, 2-0 ECC) had to battle hard for wins at first and second doubles against the Redhawks (4-8, 0-2 ECC) as Gabriel Mendez and Roman Laga needed a tiebreak to beat Hugo Ball-Greene and Guido Janssen by a 9-8 (8-6) score at the top tandem. At the No. 2 slot, Lucas Martinez and Stanislas Bedrune also won but had a devil of a time in an 8-6 victory against RWC's Dennis Barlotta and Dustin Eshleman. Richard Sec and Cosme Jubera completed an easier victory at third-doubles with an 8-1 romp over Harmeet Luthra and Jose Carrillo.

In singles play, the Knights found their second gear and crushed the Redhawks into submission to claim their second conference win of the season. Mendez took down Ball-Greene in a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the top flight of singles while Laga had a tougher victory (7-5, 6-3) against Janssen at No. 2 singles. Sec shut out Andrew Freeman (6-0, 6-0) at third-singles and Martinez duplicated that feat against Luthra at fifth-singles. Miguel Bendito won over Carrillo after losing the first set, as his opponent retired due to injury. The Knights needed a step-up performance from Hugo Andrade at fourth-singles to claim the 9-0 sweep and the freshman delivered with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory at fourth-singles against Barlotta.

QC will welcome in Concordia College for a 1 p.m. match on Tuesday (Mar. 27).
