Men's Tennis Romps to 7-2 Win in ECC Opener over Daemen

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2018) - The Queens College men's tennis team commenced its defense of the East Coast Conference championship in style on Monday (Mar. 23) with a 7-2 victory over Daemen College at the QC Tennis Center.

Queens (11-3, 1-0 ECC) went 2-1 in doubles to kick off the match with the Knights' victories coming in second- and third-tandems. Jose Zurro and Miguel Bendito claimed an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 tandem while Hugo Andrade and Nick Volos scored an 8-5 win at the third-doubles match. The Knights were tested in the singles play but came out on top in five of the six flights to achieve the conference win. Zurro was a straight-sets winner (6-3, 6-2) over David Gonzalez at the top flight of singles and Lucas Martinez earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tim Georg at third singles. Bendito needed a third set to knock off Fabian Wilde in fourth-singles play (6-4, 1-6, 10-8) while Nick Volos gritted out a 7-5, 7-6 (5) straight sets win at No. 5 singles against Mark Veitengruber. Stanislas Bedrune overwhelmed Pablo Martinez in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 6 singles for QC, as well.

The Knights will continue ECC competition on Saturday (Mar. 24) as Queens welcomes Roberts Wesleyan to Flushing for a 12 p.m. start time.
