FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 9, 2018) - Up 2-1 after doubles competition on Friday (Mar. 9), the Queens College men's tennis team swept all six singles matches to claim its ninth consecutive win and defeat Jefferson University by an 8-1 score at the QC Tennis Center.
The team of Gabriel Mendez and Roman Laga was once again dominant at No. 1 doubles for Queens (9-0) as the duo scored an 8-1 thrashing of Jacobo Atri and Joseph Sison from Jefferson (2-3). Mendez and Laga are 5-0 on the season now as a doubles pair and have won all of their matches at the top tandem. At third-doubles, Miguel Bendito and Stanislas Bedrune also had an easy time with an 8-4 win against Luis Molina and James Pollard. The teams watched a marathon at second-doubles, with Richard Sec and Jose Zurro succumbing to a tiebreak in a heartbreaking manner as Jefferson picked up its first---and only---point of the match.
The Knights turned into an overwhelming juggernaut in singles play with all six flights being won in straight sets by the home team. Mendez was a 6-3, 6-2 victor at No. 1 singles over Liviu Trifoi; Cosme Jubera knocked down Molina handily at second-singles by a 6-3, 6-1 score. Lucas Martinez needed a tiebreak in the first set against Joao Marcal before claiming a 6-0 second set to win at the third flight, while Sec's 6-0 first set paved the way for a 6-4 second set at fourth-singles against Atri. Camilo Arias and Nick Volos won at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to produce the Knights' final result in an 8-1 thrashing of the Rams.
Queens' 9-0 start is punctuated by a 44-12 (.778) mark in team singles percentage and a .815 percentage (22-5) in doubles play. The Knights will now travel to Florida for a six-match, six-day trip that begins on Monday (Mar. 12) with a contest against Augustana University of Illinois at 6 p.m.
