WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2018) - The Queens College men's tennis team will be defending its East Coast Conference championship crown as the top-ranked team in the league, according to a poll release on Monday (Jan. 22).
On the heels of this announcement, the QC men's tennis team has released its schedule for the 2018 spring season; the ledger of games is littered with high-caliber opponents expected from a squad that returns a majority of its star-power from last year's conference titleholders and NCAA Sweet 16 participants.
Back for the Knights are four of its five representatives from last spring's East Coast Conference teams of honor, including First Team All-ECC medalists Gabriel Mendez and Cosme Jubera and All-ECC Second-Team honorees Richard Sec and Roman Laga. The quartet of aces combined to go 44-18 in singles for a QC team that posted an unblemished record in conference play (5-0), at home (10-0) and in regional competitions (12-0). Overall last spring, Queens was 77-37 (.675) in singles play and 41-22 (.651) in doubles flights; the Knights were bested in the NCAA Sweet 16 by GLVC representative Drury University.
Queens will host 12 tennis competitions in Flushing this year, but the Knights open the season on Feb. 4 at Saint Peter's University in Jersey City. The contest with the Peacocks is a return match from the season-opener in the fall of 2016, which the Knights claimed in an 8-1 decision. Aside from conference opponents---NYIT, UDC, St. Thomas Aquinas, Roberts Wesleyan and Daemen---the Knights will face familiar foes Adelphi, Florida Southern and Chestnut Hill from the 2017 campaign. Queens will play host to eight consecutive contests as Southern New Hampshire visits Flushing on Feb. 9 to open the home-stand; the Knights will see Stonehill, Franklin Pierce and Jefferson along with the aforementioned Adelphi and Chestnut Hill while also taking on Division I Fairleigh Dickinson before travelling to Lakeland, Fla. on Mar. 16 to face the Mocs of Florida Southern. The Knights will also face Concordia College and Salem International University before the season ends.
As for the conference poll, the Knights claimed five of six first-place votes with ECC runner-up NYIT bagging the other top vote in the tally. UDC and STAC round out the top-four with Roberts Wesleyan and Daemen rounding out the six-team league. The full ECC poll results can be found below.
