Queens College inducted eight members of the Class of 2017 into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 13, at Harbor Links Golf Club in Port Washington, N.Y. QC's sixth class includes eight members, with five outstanding individuals and three teams of distinction, including former Queens College athletes, coaches, and championship teams.
The Class of 2017 features Alan Landes, Frank Saracino, Cheryl Vigo, Howard M. Elson and Nicole Young, along with the Knights' 1967 baseball team, 1980 softball team and 2007 women's tennis team.
Our third Hall of Fame Spotlight is Alan Landes, Men's Tennis Coach.
Alan Landes coached the Queens College men's tennis team for 27 seasons, leading the Knights to 342 victories. While at the helm, the Knights earned six NCAA tournament bids and reached the round of 32 in both 2005 and 2006. He led the program to six conference titles before Queens joined the N.Y.C.A.C. in 1993. That year, Queens captured the conference's inaugural men's tennis crown, while Landes garnered N.Y.C.A.C. Coach of the Year honors.
He later won Eastern Tennis Association Coach of the Year in 2003 and was named ITA East Region Coach of the Year in 2004. An alumnus and former teacher at Queens, Landes was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in June before passing away after a courageous battle against cancer.
